The Glória Funicular, popularly known as the Elevador da Glória, is located in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, and is one of the most iconic symbols of the capital. Running along the Calçada da Glória, it connects the Praça dos Restauradores to the Bairro Alto. It is one of the funiculars operated by Carris.

On 3 September 2025, in the late afternoon, the Glória funicular suffered a serious accident after the traction cable snapped and the redundant systems also failed, causing the funicular to derail and violently collide with an adjacent building. This tragedy has, to date, caused 16 deaths and dozens of injured victims, some of them in critical condition.

All of the unfortunate victims of this tragic accident, as injured parties, suffered bodily harm and, for this reason, are entitled to compensation.

Bodily Injury is independent of any possible loss or reduction of earnings.

There is a set of parameters which are usually included within the concept of Bodily Injury, some temporary, others permanent.

As regards temporary damages, these include: Temporary Functional Deficit, Temporary Impact on Professional Activity, Temporary Domestic Assistance, and Quantum Doloris.

With respect to permanent damages, these include: Permanent Functional Deficit, Permanent Impact on Professional Activity, Permanent Aesthetic Damage, Permanent Impact on Sports and Leisure Activities, Permanent Impact on Sexual Activity, and Permanent Dependence on Assistance.

These categories or parameters of damage are integral to the concept of bodily injury.

This concept, although essentially non-pecuniary in nature, very often entails pecuniary consequences.

The victims of this tragic accident, as well as, where applicable, their closest relatives, are entitled to be indemnified and fairly compensated by Carris’s insurer and, eventually, by Carris itself.
